Man Dies in Streatham Fire as Murder Charges Fly

Detectives have identified the man who died in a shocking Streatham blaze as 49-year-old Basilio Dos Santos Antonio. He was found dead inside a home on Glenister Park Road on the evening of Sunday, February 25.

Two Charged Over Fatal Fire

Police have charged Mayara Loiola Ataide, 34, and Gevaldo Tavares Dos Santos, 46—both with no fixed address—with murder and two counts of arson with intent to endanger life. The charges came on February 28 as the investigation took a serious turn.

Both appeared at the Old Bailey on March 1 and were remanded in custody ahead of their trial set for January 2, 2025.

Victim Remembered by Detective

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn led the inquiry and paid tribute to Basilio, originally from Brazil. “Basilio had been in the UK for several years and worked as a cleaner. Our thoughts are with his family and friends as they continue to come to terms with their loss,” she said.

Police Appeal for Information

The investigation began after a call came into the London Fire Brigade at 19:07 on February 25 reporting a fire at the multi-occupancy house. Basilio was found inside the property, and his next of kin have been informed and are receiving support.
