Streatham Man Jailed for GBL Drug Ring and Assault on Police
Ricardo MacQueen De Aguiar, 36, from Hopton Road, Streatham, has been sentenced to seven years behind bars at Croydon Crown Court. His crimes include importing and distributing the dangerous Class B drug GBL, assaulting emergency workers, and breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
GBL: The Secret Drug Threatening London’s Streets
GBL, commonly used as an industrial solvent, is notoriously hard to control due to its legal uses. Yet it’s gained infamy for its recreational role, particularly within the LGBT+ community and men who have sex with men – often used to boost sexual experiences. The drug poses severe health risks and has been linked to sexual assaults across the capital.
How the Met Police Cracked the Case
The investigation kicked off in September 2023 when UK Border Force intercepted 50 litres of GBL shipped from Poland to a flat in Lambeth. Police raids uncovered key evidence like a hard drive, mobile phone, and incriminating paperwork tied to De Aguiar.
“I’m proud of the dedicated detectives who dug deep into the vast amount of data seized as part of this investigation – their professional curiosity led us to build a robust case against De Aguiar and ultimately helped to take this dangerous man off our streets,” said Detective Constable Eoghan O’Neil.
Violent Arrest and Wider Impacts
During his arrest, De Aguiar violently assaulted two police officers, adding more charges including non-fatal strangulation and a religiously aggravated public order offence. The Met Police are now working closely with health and charity partners to tackle the complex issues around chemsex and recreational drug use in London’s LGBT+ scene.
New LGBT+ Community Liaison Officers have been appointed to boost trust, encouraging people to report crimes and seek help without fear. This tough sentence sends a clear message: London’s drug criminals won’t escape justice, no matter how tricky the case.
