New NHS Diagnostic Hub Opens in Eltham – Slashes Wait Times and Cuts Travel
Cutting-Edge NHS Diagnostics Now in Eltham
A brand-new £10 million NHS facility has swung open its doors in Eltham, aiming to revolutionise diagnostic services across south-east London. The Eltham Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) officially launched on Wednesday, May 14, with MP Clive Efford and local leaders joining the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Situated at Eltham Community Hospital on Passey Place, this state-of-the-art centre is part of a national push to bring vital diagnostic testing closer to patients, easing pressure on major hospitals.
Fast, Local Diagnoses – Thousands of Tests a Year
The Eltham CDC expects to deliver up to 94,000 diagnostic tests annually, including:
- 40,000 CT scans, MRIs, and X-rays
- 28,000 blood tests
- Ultrasound, respiratory, cardiology, and dermatology diagnostics
Since kicking off early services in late 2024, over 40,000 diagnostic appointments have already been completed.
Ben Travis, Chief Executive of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, hailed the centre as “what modern, community-based NHS care can and should look like,” adding it “reduces waiting times, provides quicker diagnoses, and keeps services closer to people’s homes.”
Open Daily to Serve Local and Regional Patients
The centre operates from 8am to 8pm daily, accepting GP referrals from across the region and even from other NHS trusts. Equipped with cutting-edge imaging technology, the facility:
- Reduces travel times for patients
- Boosts early diagnosis rates
- Relieves strain on London’s overstretched hospitals
Gabi Darby, Chief Operating Officer for Greenwich at NHS South-East London ICB, said:
“We are building a more responsive, neighbourhood-based NHS. This centre is a major step in delivering early care and reducing serious health outcomes.”
Leading the Way in Community Healthcare Nationwide
The Eltham CDC joins a network of over 170 community diagnostic centres across the UK. This initiative forms a key part of the government’s plan to modernise healthcare and tackle health inequalities by making services faster, fairer, and more accessible.
Eltham’s new centre is already being hailed as a benchmark for a smarter, community-focused NHS that puts patients first.
