A former Bedfordshire Police officer has been slammed for ignoring urgent safety warnings for a vulnerable pregnant woman who was later kidnapped and assaulted. Lee Beddington, 51, was found guilty of gross misconduct after a damning disciplinary panel ruling.
Safety Concerns Brushed Aside
- Between 2 and 6 October 2023, Beddington was responsible for safeguarding a four-month pregnant woman in Bedford.
- Despite a colleague’s advice to make an urgent adult safeguarding referral on 2 October, Beddington failed to act.
- Just four days later, on 6 October, the woman was kidnapped and assaulted.
Gross Negligence Led to Dismissal
A two-day misconduct hearing revealed Beddington neglected his duties by:
- Skipping crucial welfare checks
- Failing to complete an adult safeguarding referral
- Ignoring attempts to contact the woman or implement protection
Had he not quit in January 2025, Beddington would have been fired. He is now permanently barred by the College of Policing from ever serving as an officer again.
