More properties evacuated as work continues to ensure the structural integrity of the reservoir wall at Whaley Bridge

Further evacuations have taken place downstream of the Toddbrook Reservoir as work continues to be done to ensure the structural integrity of the reservoir wall.

A small number of properties that lie within the flood risk area outside Whaley Bridge have been evacuated – these are in the areas of Furness Vale and New Mills. Officers have contacted, or are in the process of contacting, all those that are affected.

A number of roads are closed in these areas as part of the above plan – these include those on the attached document.

All residents in the area of Whaley Bridge that is at highest risk of flooding, should the reservoir give way, have been contacted by officers and asked to leave their properties.

ACC Kem Mehmet said: “We understand that residents will be concerned about leaving their homes, however, our priority is to ensure people are kept safe and well and are not taking unnecessary risks.

“This is not a decision that has been taken lightly and we appreciate that there is a significant impact on this community, however, this is an unprecedented, fast-moving, emergency situation.

“A evacuation point has been set up at Chapel High School, Long Lane, Chapel-en-le-Frith, High Peak, SK23 0TQ, and residents will be accommodated if they are unable to make alternative arrangements.

“I would like to reiterate the importance of heeding the advice that officers are giving as this is for everyone’s safety.”
