Landslip on the Isle of Wight sees footpath closed

The Isle of Wight Council has closed a footpath following what is understood to be a landslip at Alum Bay in the West Wight

A small part of the cliff face has fallen away affecting the structural integrity and safety of the final flight of stairs onto the beach.

Members of the Council Rights of Way team are on site with contractors to further assess what has happened and what needs to be done to re-open the step access.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:

“The Council knows how important and popular this beach access is, especially at this time of the year, and if repairs are feasible will act swiftly to reopen the path.

“Signs and barriers have been erected, and for your safety please don’t try to use the steps at the moment. We will give an update statement as soon as we know more”.
