M2 Motorway has been closed from Junction 4 to Junction 5 following a vehicle fire

The M2 is currently closed from J4 to J5 in both directions with delays of at least 30 minutes covering several miles of the motorway. The full road closure is due to a vehicle fire and Highways England and the emergency services have resources deployed working hard to restore normal conditions as soon as possible.

For traffic approaching the closure locally, you are advised to expect disruption with extra journey time and may potentially have to re-route your journey.

If travelling towards this area from much farther afield, you may wish to change your strategic route consider using the M20 or A2 if possible, allow extra travel time and follow guidance from our on-road variable message signs and media.

Diversion route details and guidance is as follows;

Coast/Eastbound is signed by the solid circle diversion symbol:
Diverted Traffic will exit the M2 at junction 3 and enter the roundabout complex at Walderslade/Blue bell Hill. It will negotiate this then enter the south bound carriageway of the A229 towards Maidstone where it will exit at the M20 Coast bound junction. From here it will travel eastwards and exit the M20 at junction 7 onto the northbound A249 where it will continue towards the M2 at junction 5 Stockbury where it can resume.
London/Westbound diversion route will be signed by the solid square diversion:
London bound diverted traffic will exit the M2 at junction 5 into the southbound A249 then continue on this until Junction 7 of the M20. Here traffic will then enter the M20 London Bound towards and until Junction 4. Here it will exit the M20 onto the northbound A228 and travel along this to Junction 2 of the M2 where it can resume.
