Trump to visit Portsmouth in June

President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, is set to visit Southsea as part of the major commemorations taking place to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Trump will be making a state visit to the United Kingdom between 3rd-5th June, which will include a trip to Portsmouth on Wednesday 5th June.

This week it has been announced that more than 11 Royal Navy ships will take up position on the Solent as part of the national event to mark 75 years since D Day. This will include the mobilisation of more than 4,000 personnel and a RAF fly past involving 26 aircraft.

Changes to ferry timetables and traffic arrangements in and around Portsmouth is likely, more so as a result of the President’s attendance at the event. The event will provide a unique opportunity to see the military in action and pay respects to those who paid the ultimate price. Furthermore, it will be the closest many Islanders will have ever come to a state visit.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said over the weekend:

“We’re very proud that Portsmouth is at the heart of the D-Day 75 anniversary event, and Hampshire Constabulary is ready to play its full part in honouring the heroes who made such great sacrifices for us.

“This will be a national commemoration and we expect the policing operation to reflect this, ensuring a safe event for the veterans, visitors, residents and businesses.

“We are already planning with local and national partners, drawing on a vast amount of experience our officers and staff have from policing other recent large-scale events”.

David Williams Chief Executive Portsmouth City Council, has said:

“The scale of D-Day 75 is unprecedented with Portsmouth at the heart of commemorations on 5 June. The city will provide the back drop for the armed forces to mark this historic occasion and, most importantly, to pay tribute to veterans and their comrades and reflect on lessons learned.”
