Parents Arrested over Staffordshire House fire

Officers from Staffordshire Police have made two arrests this afternoon (Feb 8) following a house fire in Stafford on Tuesday.

Following an update from investigators into the probable cause of the fire we have arrested a 24-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence.

Neighbours who watch the arrests take place have named the pair locally as Natalie Unitt and Chris Moulton.

It remains unclear what caused the fire but early suggestions have pointed to a ‘gas explosion’, which could have been sparked by a faulty boiler.
One neighbour said Chris was a bit of a Do yourself guy. I know he’d made a lot of changes in the house.

Natalie escaped by jumping out of a bedroom window with her partner 28, who was clutching their 2-year-old son Jack.

Staffordshire Police said the two people were arrested at 1.30pm today and remain in custody.

Natalie had screamed “my babies, my babies” as the inferno tore through the two-storey home in the early hours of Tuesday.
The arrests were made at around 1.30pm. The man and woman are in custody.

We understand from sources that part of their investigation centre around the gas within the property. Fire crews were beaten back when entering the property by a blue and green flame that was seen coming from a gas pipe near the stairs that had been blown away. When the fire crews arrived the fire was a fully developed fire.

This incident has had a huge impact on the community and we understand there will be confusion and a demand for information.

Police have urge people not to speculate as to what may have happened and appeal for patience as the investigation continues.
