Fire Crew Called to Locks Green Garage Fire in Porchfield

A large black smoke cloud could be seen as far as Newport this lunchtime after an out of control bonfire spread to a pile of tyres at the Locks Green Garage in Porchfield. Firefighters stationed at Newport and Ryde from Isle of Wight fire and rescue were called to the out of control blaze just after 1pm on Thursday afternoon.

Workers at the garage raised the alarm as the cloud of black smoke grew bigger and bigger.
Staff at the site said that sparks from asmall fire had set alight a large pile of tyres.

Firefighters are tackling the large blaze with one high-pressure hose reel jet.

UPDATE:1.45pm Firefighters remain at the scene. Surporting appliances from Ryde have also been sent to assist crews as a pile of tyres and logs remain alight. We approached the staff at the garage workshop for comment :

UPDATE 1.45pm A water carrier from Freshwater has been sent to the incident due to the location and supply of water that is hampering fire fighting efforts.
