The Sandown and Shanklin Inshore Lifeboat and the Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 175 have been scrambled to carry out a search of the East Wight on orders from the UK Coastguard operation Centre at Fareham.
The Lifeboat was launched just after 5pm and the helicopter from Lee on the Solent was also tasked into the search just after 5.10pm on Saturday afternoon. A coastguard search and rescue team have also been tasked to assist with the search that is now focusing in and around Ventnor and St Catherine’s Point.
The UK Coastguard have revealed that they have launched a probe and are working with Hampshire Police as the incident was found to be a malicious hoax call.
