Man Jailed for Racist outburst in New Romney street

Matthew Bevan, 36, was arrested outside a property in Joseph’s Way after causing a disturbance in the street on Thursday 22 March 2018.

The court heard how Bevan, also from Joseph’s Way, was standing outside a woman’s house hurling racist abuse towards a man he believed was inside.

His behaviour was witnessed by members of the public and was reported to Kent Police.

Officers attended the area and he was arrested and taken into custody.

During the investigation, further information came to light.

Officers heard that on Monday 24 April 2017 he had threatened another woman with a knife following an argument and on Wednesday 25 October 2017 he had assaulted her inside a property.

Bevan pleaded guilty to threats to kill, assault by beating and stalking at Canterbury Crown Court on Monday 23 July 2018. He was sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison.

Investigating officer PC Tracy Lawson said: ‘Bevan has shown he is a violent man and whilst it can be difficult for people to escape from abusive relationships, the victim should be praised for her bravery in reporting the offences to us. As a result he’ll now serve time in prison.

‘Tackling domestic violence is one of Kent Police’s priorities and we would urge anyone else suffering to contact us in the knowledge we will provide victims with all the support they require.’
