Sixty Firefighters and a Helicopter tackle major Fire in Ventnor

A fire crew have been mobilised after a sailor contacted the fire service to say that he could see smoke and flames in the St Lawerance area of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight this afternoon.

A fire crew from Shanklin have been mobilised to carry out investigation it is understood that the fire is near the Old Park Hotel in the village.
Fire crews from Newport and Ryde have also been sent to the incident and a water carrier has also been requested

A total of six Pumps are now dealing with the large undergrowth fire within in a wooded area near the Old Park Hotel. Approx 60 firefighters and officers are at the scene of the undergrowth fire using 15 length of hose and two water carriers to tackle the blaze. Access to the seat of the been restricted due to the remote location and the damaged Undercliffe Drive.

Two fire appliances from Newport, Ryde, Shanklin and East Cowes along with two water carriers from Freshwater and Ventnor are currently at the incident.

A spokesperson from the fire service said the fire started at 50 metres x 50 metres but is spreading uphill at a rapid rate.

Fire bosses have called on the assistance of the National air support from Bournemouth to assist firefighters in locating the fire.

Guest within the Old Park hotel are being advised to stay indoors
