A 36-year-old Portsmouth man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent following a stabbing in the city centre last night.
Detectives are continuing the hunt for two other males who fled the scene after a Southsea man, also 36, was stabbed on Lake Road yesterday evening.
The arrested man is currently in custody at Portsmouth Central police station where he is being grilled by two officers from Fratton CID.
Lake Road was sealed-off by a police cordon just after 9pm following the attack, as exclusively reported last night.
Residents report an altercation between four males in their 20s-30s outside Cornwallis House between 8pm and 8.45pm.
A black male was said to have been stabbed in both legs at approximately 8.45pm before the three other males fled the scene on foot.
The victim was laying in Lake Road, bleeding heavily from his legs, before being rushed to Southampton General Hospital by paramedics at approximately 9.30pm. His injuries are described as serious, but are not believed to be life-threatening.
An unnamed resident said “I went down and asked if they needed a blanket, apparently it was 3 men and they ran off before police got there. When I went down there the man was on the floor and his leg was covered in blood.”
DI Dave West said, “We’re appealing for the publics’ help to establish exactly what has happened.
“We’d like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed an assault or any suspicious activity in the area around Lake Road last night.
“If you have any information that could help with our investigation, please call 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers.”
Chief Inspector Jason Kenny said “People in the local community are likely to see an increased police presence in the area today as officers investigate and carry out reassurance patrols.”
