Hayling Curry House Death was Due to Man Falling Down Stairs

A pensioner, who died after an incident at a Hayling Island curry house at the weekend, received head injuries after falling down the stairs, we can reveal.
Ambulance staff were called to the scene at the Gandhi Restaurant on Hollow Lane, South Hayling at 1am on Saturday morning.

A 65-year-old man was rushed to QA Hospital in Cosham but died shortly before 10am that day.

A 34-year-old man has been released under investigation – following the death. He is one of a party of four male diners, including the deceased, who had been at the restaurant on Friday evening.

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, told us that all four men had been drinking but had been in good spirits before the incident.

“They just appeared to be having a good Friday night out,” she said. “Then, as they went to leave there seemed to be some kind of disagreement between two of the men. The next thing we knew there was screams as the older gentleman fell down the stairs.”

Detectives investigating the suspicious death say a post-mortem has revealed the 65-year-old died of a head injury.

Two other men aged, 32 and 37 were also originally arrested on suspicion of murder but have now been released.

Police have thanked those who dined at the Gandhi Restaurant on Friday evening (3rd November) that have already contacted them but are asking anyone other diners who haven’t been in touch to please do so as they may have vital information.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Major Crime Department at Fratton police station on 101 or call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111
