A block of flats has been evacuated following a fire that has broken out on the 2nd floor in Bognor Regis this evening.
Residents had to be evacuated after the fire broke out on the second floor of the block of flats on Lyon Street just this evening.
Fire crews from Bognor raced to Phoenix court in the town just after 7pm this evening.
Police cordoned off the area to assist fire crews and a local traffic diversion was put in place.
Two teams of fire fighters were committed in breathing apparatus using a high pressure hose reel to tackle the fire that broke out in the timber framed building. The flat has been severely damaged by fire.
It is understood that the flat was unoccupied when the fire broke out in the dinning room area. A resident who asked not to be name claimed that the owner told a neighbour that she was going away for a few days following a despite of a drug dealing debt.
A number of people have been left homeless as a result of the fire following water and smoke damage to their properties.
A total of 20 firefighters tackled the blaze, which has destroyed one flat and has left other damaged from smoke and water
An investigation into the cause has been launched.
One resident who witnessed the incident unfold said Smoke was “pouring out of the windows and flames licked around the doors” as flames engulfed the flat.
A Spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Said that Four pumping appliances had been sent to tackle a fire at the three storey building crews where mobilised just after 7pm.
