A breakdown recovery driver is this evening recovering in hospital with serious injuries after the recovery vehicle he was driving left the A31 westbound carriageway(Tuesday).
Emergency services rushed to the scene just before 11pm after receiving numerous calls about the incident after the truck left the carriage way ploughing into the central reservation of the busy trunk road.

One lane of the A31 was closed whilst fire crews from Redbridge supported by retained fire fighters from Burley battled to free the injured driver using specialist hydraulic cutting equipment after he became trapped in his cab. The man who works for Ravencroft motor company who on his way to give aid to a driver. He was freed by fire crews after about an hour and strapped to a spinal-board.
The driver who’s injuries are thought to be serious was treated by Hazardous Area response paramedics who also attended the incident. He was stabilised.Than transferred to Southampton General Hospital with what is thought to be spinal and head injuries.
The crash happened on the same stretch of road that claimed the life of a recovery truck driver Terry Booth from Boarhunt Garage in June 2008 after a driver failed to see him after he trying to fix a broken down car. The driver of the Chrysler car which hit him was jailed in 2009 for causing death by dangerous driving. Susan Lowe, 64, of Leeds, West Yorkshire, had probably fallen asleep at the wheel of her car and ploughed into the broken-down Peugeot which Mr Booth was working on.
