Burglary and fire at Yeovil charity shop under investigation

Police officers from Avon and Somerset  are  investigating a burglary and a fire at a charity shop in Yeovil town centre.

Officers are working with investigators from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service to find out what started a fire, which caused significant damage to the Age UK shop in Middle Street.

Police have  confirmed there was a burglary at the store around 6pm last night in which a quantity of petty cash was stolen, following which a fire broke out.

A spokeswoman from Devon and Somerset  Fire Service said “We  received a number of calls reporting a fire at a premises in Middle Street, Yeovil.  Fire Control initially mobilised two appliances from Yeovil to attend.  Due to the number of calls a third appliance was mobilised to this incident from Yeovil. Crews were arriving on scene and confirmed one building possibly three storeys, flames issuing from first and second floors, crews then requested a further two appliances which came from Martock and Sherborne.  Crews also requested an aerial ladder platform which was mobilised from Yeovil.
Crews from Yeovil revisited the incident at midnight and confirmed there to be no signs of re-ignition.  Fire investigation will be carried out during day light hours to determine the cause of the fire.

Two men were seen in the South Street area shortly after the break-in and we’re in the process of reviewing CCTV footage in the local area.

We want to speak to anyone who may have mobile phone photos or video footage taken around the time the fire broke out, as well as anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area of the shop around 6pm last night.
